History and Past Directors

The McQuinn Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership was established in 2004 through the generous support of AI and Mary Agnes McQuinn, with matching funds from the College of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources (CAFNR) at the University of Missouri (MU). This initiative was driven by the McQuinns’ dedication to fostering entrepreneurship and innovation in agriculture, natural resources, and rural communities.

As one of the research and outreach centers within the Division of Applied Social Sciences (DASS), the McQuinn Center is uniquely positioned to advance research, classroom teaching, and one-on-one mentoring in entrepreneurial leadership. Its mission focuses on promoting entrepreneurship in life and social sciences, food systems, agriculture, and natural resources to drive economic development and improve livelihoods in Missouri while enhancing MU’s national reputation as a leader in innovation.

AI McQuinn, a distinguished MU alumnus, Army ROTC graduate, and founder of Ag-Chem Equipment Co. Inc., revolutionized agricultural technology with his pioneering work in precision agriculture. Together with his wife, Mary Agnes McQuinn, who shared his passion for education and innovation, they envisioned a Center dedicated to nurturing future entrepreneurial leaders in agriculture and rural development.

Unlike traditional business programs, the McQuinn Center specializes in entrepreneurship within agriculture, natural resources, and rural communities. Through its targeted educational programs, workshops, and industry collaborations, the Center empowers students, faculty, and community members with entrepreneurial competencies to develop innovative solutions addressing challenges in food systems, natural resources, and rural economies.

Over the years, the Center has been shaped by the leadership of past directors Drs. Bruce Bullock and Randall Westgren. Under the current direction of Stephen Mukembo and the team, the McQuinn Center continues to advance its mission of fostering innovation and sustainable business practices to improve Missouri livelihoods and beyond.

Guided by the values of entrepreneurial leadership, creativity, collaboration, and innovation, the McQuinn Center remains a vital resource for driving positive change and entrepreneurship. It stands as a living tribute to Al and Mary Agnes McQuinn’s vision, inspiring generations to lead and innovate in agriculture and beyond.
