Missouri Century Farms Project

Missouri Century Farms Research Project

The McQuinn Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership is conducting a research project focused on Missouri’s Century Farms—family farms that been owned and operated by the same family for over 100 years. These farms are recognized through the Century Farm Program, established in 1976 by the University of Missouri Extension and the College of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources, with the Missouri Farm Bureau joining as a co-sponsor in 2008. Today, over 8,000 farms in Missouri hold this designation.

In an era marked by declining farm numbers and an aging farming population, this research aims to uncover the key factors that have enabled these farms to sustain their operations across generations. This study specifically examines how entrepreneurial approaches and market orientation influence the performance, resilience, and sustainability of Century Farms.

Our key objectives are to:

  • Examine the relationship between entrepreneurial and market orientation and Century Farm performance.
  • Investigate how resilience and sustainability measures contribute to long-term success.
  • Develop targeted programs to strengthen and support Missouri’s family farms.

To achieve these goals, we are engaging with Century Farm families through comprehensive surveys. Insights gained from this study will provide valuable knowledge to promote farm sustainability, guide the development of tailored support programs, and secure the future of Missouri’s family farms for generations to come.
